Three people died Sunday night when their small plane experienced engine trouble and crashed in San Antonio, Texas.

The pilot, who took off from Sugar Land and was headed to Boerne, attempted an emergency landing at the San Antonio International Airport around 6:30 p.m., according to KSAT.

Instead, the plane, a single-engine four-seater, crashed onto a street about 150 yards short of the airport, miraculously avoiding the highway and a local apartment complex.

“As tragic as it is, it could have been much worse,” Fire Chief Charles Hood said at a press conference.

The three victims — the pilot and two passengers — have not been publicly identified.
