Tesla worker proposes to girlfriend as company delivers first Chinese-made cars

Tesla delivered its first Chinese-made sedans to 15 lucky employees Monday — including one who proposed to his girlfriend on the factory floor.

The worker popped the question at an event where Tesla formally handed over some of the first vehicles made at its Shanghai “Gigafactory,” where construction began less than a year ago.

The man threw on a jacket and bow tie and revealed a pile of flowers in the blue car’s front trunk before getting down on one knee in front of his apparently shocked girlfriend, who appeared to accept his proposal. Others in the crowd shot confetti behind her.

Monday’s Model 3 deliveries came just about two months after Tesla started production at its $2 billion Shanghai factory, the company’s first outside the US. The plant has since started making about 280 cars a day, according to Wang Hao, Tesla’s China general manager.

“From now onwards, China-made Model 3 vehicles will start running on China’s large streets and small lanes,” Tesla vice president Tao Lin said at the delivery ceremony.

With the Chinese plant, Elon Musk’s Silicon Valley-based automaker no longer has to import cars to China, the world’s biggest market for electric vehicles. The China-made Model 3 costs 355,800 yuan before subsidies, or roughly $50,000, while an imported one starts at 439,000 yuan, or about $62,000.

Tesla has said it plans to make 250,000 cars a year at the Shanghai factory after the addition of its Model Y crossover. The company will also double the number of fast-charging stations and service centers in China next year, Tesla executives said.

Tesla shares were up 0.1 percent at $430.80 in premarket trading as of 7:34 a.m. Monday.
