A surfer survived a “terrifying” shark attack off the coast of Southern California on Saturday.

A friend called for help after the 37-year-old man, who was not identified, was apparently bitten on his leg while riding near Santa Rosa Island.

The pal, who was on a nearby boat, applied a tourniquet to the wound and called the Coast Guard. Dramatic video released by the agency shows the surfer being airlifted to safety in the scary attack that took place just four days before Christmas.

“This was the best possible outcome to a truly terrifying situation,” said Coast Guard Lt. Benjamin McIntyre-Coble, according to NBC in California. “We are all happy that he will be able to be with his family in time for the holidays.”

The surfer was transported to the Santa Barbara airport for treatment and was listed in stable condition later Saturday.
