President Trump woke up Wednesday proclaiming his innocence and lashing out at Democrats again as near-certain impeachment looms Wednesday.
In a twist, he asked Americans for their ultimate support: “Say a PRAYER!” he wrote on Twitter.
With #ImpeachmentDay trending, Trump appeared all but resigned to being impeached later Wednesday. A majority of lawmakers in the House of Representatives have already said they will vote to impeach him in a virtually party line vote.
A day after Trump sent a rambling, barely coherent six-page letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, he hit on some of the same themes of injustice and persecution that he feels as he is poised to become the third president to be impeached. Richard Nixon was about to be impeached when he resigned in disgrace over the Watergate scandal.
“I will be impeached today by the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, AND I DID NOTHING WRONG!” he tweeted before breakfast. “A terrible thing.”
Trump is accused of abusing his presidential power and obstructing the congressional impeachment probe. Democrats say he sought to use American aid as leverage to bully Ukraine into launching damaging political investigations into his political rivals.
If the House votes for impeachment, the process moves to the GOP-controlled Senate for a trial, where a two-thirds vote is needed to oust Trump from office.
