What a hoot!
A family in Georgia was stunned last week to see they had an unexpected holiday visitor: an owl hiding out in their Christmas tree.
Katie McBride Newman first saw the brown bird last Thursday after her 10-year-old daughter, India, told her an ornament on the tree frightened her, the mother-of-two told CNN.
When Newman looked at the tree, she realized it was no ornament.
“And I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s a real owl,’” Newman, whose Facebook page says she lives in Newnan, Ga., told CNN.
The family then opened the doors and windows in their home in hopes the owl would fly out, but the animal remained at its perch, so the next day they contacted the Chattahoochee Nature Center, which is about an hour away from their residence.
Someone from the nature center came to the home on Saturday and successfully removed the owl, which the animal officials determined was an Eastern screech owl.
Because the owl was pretty thin — and appeared to not have eaten in several days — it’s possible it was in the tree when the family took it home shortly after Thanksgiving, Newman’s husband Billy told CNN.
