Iraqi demonstrators continue fiery protests following prime minister’s resignation

Iraqi protesters created a chaotic scene Saturday, following weeks of unrest over calls for government reform.

A charred Iraqi police vehicle lit up by demonstrators was left in the streets of Nasiriyah Saturday morning, photos show.

The fiery scene follows Friday night news that Prime Minister Abel Abdul Mahdi would step down in an effort to end the unrest, which has killed more than 400 people and is considered the country’s biggest crisis since ISIS seized large portions of the country in 2014.

Mahdi’s resignation is considered a concession in protesters’ favor, but they’re calling for a wholesale overhaul of what they say is a politically corrupt system that keeps them in poverty.

Dozens have been killed in recent days, as police used grenades and tear gas to quell the crowds.
