Covid Vaccine Needed as Delta Surges

Washington, (Washington Insider Magazine) – Full approval is needed by the FDA for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. It’s necessary for the FDA to convince more Americans of their need to receive the vaccines.

Social media is full of reports from medical experts saying that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are both safely and effectively preventing “severe illness, hospitalization, and death from the coronavirus.”

Eric Topol, a professor of molecular medicine at Scripps Research, said, “I don’t think there’s anything that can move the needle more in the U.S.” Topol’s comment was referring to the unvaccinated adults, who are all eligible to get the shot.

According to the CDC, “more than 183 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 135 million doses of Moderna’s have been administered in the U.S. and their rollout has correlated with a steep decline in Covid-19 cases since January.” The patients who are in the hospitals now — sick or dying – are the unvaccinated population.

Celine Gounder, an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist at New York’s Bellevue Hospital, said, “That’s as good as it gets when it comes to having data on safety and efficacy. We have it in real life – what more can people ask for?”

What will it take to spur unvaccinated Americans to get the vaccines? On June 30, a poll was released by the Kaiser Family Foundation. About a third of the adults who are unvaccinated claim that they would get the shot if “the FDA fully approved one of the shots.”

Abby Capobianco, the FDA’s spokesperson, said, “Although an authorization is not an FDA approval, the FDA conducted a thorough scientific evaluation of each of the authorized vaccines and can assure the public and medical community that the vaccines meet FDA’s rigorous standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality.”
