A California mother placed a plastic bag over her 3-year-old son’s head and tied his hands as their home burned, according to authorities.

Suspect Maricela Ruiz, who called for help, was found bound to a bed in the Santa Paula home on Sunday, but investigators believe she staged the scene. Both mother and son were treated for smoke inhalation after being rescued by firefighters.

“Detectives determined she endangered her 3-year old son by placing a plastic bag over his head and tying his hands before placing him in a bedroom by himself,” Santa Paula cops said.

Ruiz, 47, was booked into the Ventura County Jail for felony child endangerment, but was later released on $50,000 bond. Cops said her motive is unknown, but Detective Christopher Rivera told the Ventura County Star that he “would not be surprised” if more charges were added.

“You know, you never want to see a little kid in that kind of situation, you never want to see anybody in that kind of situation,” neighbor Austin Daniel told TV station KMOV. “But that’s when my heart kind of sank.”

Anyone with information about the case should contact the Santa Paula Police Department at (805) 525-4474.
