A 1-month-old girl was taken alive from a home near Houston Thursday night amid a large-scale search that has also turned up a body believed to be her missing Texas mother Heidi Broussard.
Tammy Broussard, the mother of the missing Austin woman, said authorities told her early Friday morning that remains found in the trunk of a car parked outside a home in Jersey Village likely belong to her daughter, NBC News reported. She added that her newborn granddaughter, Margot Carey, was also found alive in the nearby residence.
Both Broussard, 33, and her infant daughter had been missing for about a week when investigators first started searching the Houston-area home on Thursday. The pair were last seen alive dropping off Broussard’s 6-year-old son at Cowan Elementary school in Austin the morning of Dec. 12.
Her fiancee, Shane Carey, said he spoke to Broussard that morning and again around 2 p.m., when she told him she’d returned home — but when he arrived back at the residence later in the evening, Broussard was nowhere to be found.
Her vehicle was still parked in the driveway, Carey said, and her purse remained in her car.
Police sources told KEYE the vehicle in which the body was found was registered to one of Broussard’s close friends, who was previously interviewd in the case.
At least one person has been taken into custody in connection with the young mother’s disappearance and death, according to the news station.
The FBI and Craig Cummings with the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed to KPRC 2 they were searching the home — located in Harris County near Houston — in connection with the missing mother. Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department public information officer Lt. Daniel Arizpe told the news station that a 1-month old was found late Thursday with “no obvious injuries” and taken to the hospital for treatment.
The baby has since been placed in the care of Child Protective Services while her mother’s remains are with the medical examiner awaiting autopsy.
Law enforcement however has not otherwise publicly confirmed the details shared with Tammy Broussard. The police and medical examiner have not yet officially named the remains they discovered in the car trunk.
