$3.2 Billion to Look for Pill to Treat Covid

Washington, D.C. D.C. (Washington Insider Magazine) – On Thursday, the Biden administration said that they were searching for a pill to help speed the treatment of COVID-19.  This would be, of course, a major step in saving lives in the future.

The Department of Health and Human Services claimed that this plan – which is called the Antiviral Program for Pandemics – “would accelerate and expand support for clinical trials and aid further development of as-yet undiscovered drugs.”

The Food and Drug Administration believes that they could have an antiviral treatment for the virus ready as soon as a year.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s top infectious disease expert, believes that pills could be taken as the COVID-19 season starts to help prevent the worst impacts of the virus.  This treatment would help to keep people out of the hospital with the more serious cases that we are presently seeing. Fauci said on Thursday that these pills would be “powerful tools for battling the pandemic and saving lives.”

Dr. David Kessler, the chief science officer for the White Houses’ COVID-19 response team, said that this treatment, which is linked to Biden’s American Rescue Plan, “would only add to the robust vaccination program that’s ongoing across the country.”

Kessler added that there are some people who still remain vulnerable to the virus – people who are immunosuppressed or people who have not gotten the vaccine – and an “oral antiviral drug would be an important part of our therapeutic arsenal that would complement the great success of our vaccine efforts.”

The knowledge about medicine has grown in recent years, and we are now more able to treat HIV, Hepatitis C, and even the flu. Up until now, there are 19 drugs that seem to be an essential part of the $3.2 billion package for testing patients for COVID-19.

Dr. Fauci stated, “Vaccines clearly remain the centerpiece of our arsenal against COVID-19. However, antivirals can and are an important complement to existing vaccines.”

At the moment, only remdesivir is the only proven drug that has been approved by the FDA to help treat COVID-19. It is only available at hospitals or given as an IV in a medical facility.
