A 16-year-old New Jersey teen was busted Wednesday for stabbing an 11-year-old boy and killing the child’s older brother.
The teen, who has not been identified because of his age, broke into an apartment near Park Avenue and Lake Street in Newark Tuesday morning, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
He then stabbed 15-year-old Elijah Alvarez and his 11-year-old brother, who’s name has not been released, officials said.
Alvarez died from his injuries, authorities said. The younger brother was taken to the hospital, but his wounds were not considered life threatening,
“As a city, we mourn the loss of Elijah Alvarez, and we pray for the physical and emotional recovery of his 11-year-old brother,” said Mayor Rask Baraka in a statement.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims’ family and the community.”
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Alvarez and his attacker both attended Barringer High School.
The 16-year-old faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder and burglary, according to prosecutors.
